Looking for Great Literature

Sat Mar 15, 2008, 7:24 PM
This is an experiment of sorts. I got the idea the other day, and it stuck for once. Basically, I want to scout the deviantART prose gallery in search of good fiction. If I find something I like, I'll leave you a comment and add the deviation to my favorites. The goal is to have an entire account dedicated solely to great literature that's worth every second of reading time. Of course, my personal preferences will come out in what I define as "great literature," but I have a relatively open mind.

Here are a few things I look for in good fiction:

Style. It's got to be well-written. Know the rules of punctuation and grammar before you break them--or use them in the first place.

Plot. Who doesn't love a great storyline!

Characters. There's nothing I enjoy more than a well-invented character with a detailed backstory and intriguing personality.

Originality. If it's just one more of the same, I'm not interested, no matter how well-written.

Pace. Keep it moving! Otherwise I get bored.

Message. I'm particularly interested in stories with a strong, moral message. Otherwise, what's the point of writing?

These are a few things that will turn me away from a piece of writing:

Vulgar. If you can't keep it clean, it won't hold my interest. This includes homosexuality, sexuality in general, sorcery, horror, and gore.

Long paragraphs. My attention span, unfortunately, doesn't exceed half a page of solid text.

Passive voice. Especially in the first sentence. If you don't know the difference between active and passive voice, check out this article: [link]

Lengthy description and narration. Keep it concise! My attention span again.

Unbelievability. Fiction doesn't have to be realist to be believable, but it does have to be consistent and logical.

All right, off to talent scout! =D

Oooh, you're looking for good prose? I can see you've compiled some great selections in your favourites. I guess we both have something in common. I'm looking for good prose to suggest to *DailyLitDeviations, as I am a prose admin for that account. If you have any good prose you think is worthy of a great feature, please note the link to me. :)

P.S I write prose too. ;)

Hi! Thank you very much for the favorite on Common Errors in English again! ^^ I really appreciate it!

By the way, you seem to be someone who's very interested in writing. Well, I'm not interested in writing (I am just interested in common errors made in the English language and I do feel annoyed seeing them), but I'd like to recommend this site: [link]
It's one of my favorite sites out there, and I thought you might be interested. :)
